Hi there,
I have been given the task of upgrading our only iSeries (which is a production machine) from v5r2 to v5r3.
By the way Ihave only been working with AS400 for about 3 months.

I an following the IBM upgrade/install manual but have a
question.

It talks about checking system values, namely QSYSLIBL and QUSRLIBL.
It says to ensure that there are no Licensed Program Libraries in the list.

What exactly is a Licensed Program Library?
I have things like ASP2, WRKMGT and QHLPSYS in the QSYSLIBL value.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Try the Display Software Resources command DSPSFWRSC to determine the library belonging to an IBM Licensed Program. Almost all IBM supplied libraries begin with letter 'Q'. You may want to use the print option so that the License Program Name and associated library are togther: DSPSFWRSC OUTPUT(*PRINT). Assuming proper authority, this should list all IBM Licensed Programs on your system.

every time I have upgraded our system I have followed the "automatic path". Unless the machine is something out of the ordinary you should not have any problems. I would make sure that you are current on the PTF levels before starting the upgrade, just to be on the safe side.

Cool, thanks for that.
I keep swaying between "This upgrade will go fine" and "I haven't a clue what I am doing".
It would have been nice to have a dev box to have a crack on first.
As it is I have 1/2 a weekend to upgrade the one live system that the whole company uses... nice.

Another question(s):
Do I have to wait untill after I have permanently applied the current PFTs and done an IPL (maybe this weekend) and Temporarily applied the Software Agreement PTFs to build the list of S/W to install, or can it be done now?

Thanks again,
Jas

A lot depends on "how" used the AS400 is,, you could temp apply the PTF's, setting them to apply permantly at the next IPL,, Then IPL the machine right before you go home. Depsnds on how much use the machine gets after hours. You want to make sure everything is permantely applied before you start the upgrade. Also, do 2 complete systems saves before you upgrade. better safe than sorry.
