Upgrade from 5.2A to 5.5

1. Make a backup of all programs and data
2. Install the software
3. Read the Update notice for System Manager, if you're on Pervasive you'll need to upgrade your database.
4. Activate the modules starting with GL, and follow the instructions you see.

Pervasive needs to be version 9.5 or higher (I'm using 10 on all of mine).
You might be able to go directly if your data is clean and you don't have a lot of add-on modules. You don't know until you try. Last week I did one of my clients, and all 9 databases went directly from 5.2 to 5.5 with only minor issues (like needing a Dbdump/Dbload).
