Upgrade CISCO Image, but now dead! 1

Hello All!

I'm after some help. We have upgraded our Cisco Router 1601R, to a newer image (c1600-y-mz.121-26.bin), following CISCO guidelines from their website (

This appeared to go OK, until we got to the part where we erased the flash device (had to as not enough room). Went through next step OK (!!!!!!!,ETC.)We then followed instructions to Reoad router, and confirmed to proceed - It was here that it all failed. We can no longer telnet onto the router, or PING it. Unable to access direct through a laptop and cable.
Is it possible that the image is corupt, and if so, how can we reconnect without a vaild IP address?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am suspecting the router is still trying to boot the previous image and since it no longer exist it cannot boot properly. You need to access the router trough the console port and follow the instructions on the link below:

Thanks for the response 'TheMut' - Unfortunately, I cannot even get connected to the router. Have tried Telnet command, but guess the IP is now invaled/corrupt. Have tried through the COM port of a laptop, and Console port of Router, but HyperTerminal session will not show anything.
Is there a default state I can return the router to (much like a Cold Reset on network printer), so that I can recoonect, and then upload the old image?

If the router is in ROMMON you will never access the router trhough telnet, but you should always have access to the console port.

Are you using the rollover cable (flat light blue, or flat black cable) to access the console port? You can only use this cable to access the console port, a straight through or crossover cabel will not work with the console port.

Are you using the correct settings in HyperTerminal? The settings are:

Bits per second: 9600
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: None

Make sure the COMM port is not used by another application.
Like I said, you should always access the console port regardles if an IOS image is corrupt or is not installed. The only reason you woul not have access to the console port is a bad console port.

Thanks for the help. I've just got back from our off-site store, and got the correct management cable. On my return, it appears the router will now accept a TELNET command, all be it in BOOT mode.

Am now in the process of searching CISCo for a valid iamge for the hardware in question - Hopefully, should all be working again soon.

Try following the procedure described in the link above, it may just be the image is fine but the router doesn't know how to boot it.

Will do - Unfortunately, cannot get it out of BOOT mode - Have you any suggestions please?

Well that link precisely guide you to recover the router from ROMMON.
If you do a "dir flash:" and then gather the IOS file name from the output, and try to boot that image using the command "boot flash:<ios file name>" If it doesn't recover from ROMMON then you may have to load the IOS again using one of the procedures mentioned on the link provided above.

Didn't read the document fully - BOOT mode is mentioned further down. However, when trying to load an image, it then went through the motions, but failed.
Since then, I have now connected to the router using management cable - Router boots, but then error appears saying that Not Enough Memory to boot from. Looks like I have 2 options - Purchase more RAM (have some now on order, but not in until tomorrow), or use the ROMMON mode, which you advised me to use earlier. I'm still having the issue of not being able to get the ROMMOM prompt to appear. All I get is the router stuck in a Boot cycle, which then tells me I'm out of memory. Hav elooked at following URL, but still cannot get ROMMON prompt.

Try to get it to ROMMON:
Turn it off and then back on, as soon as you see information displayed on the console then hit both "Ctrl" and "Break" keys several times. This sequence during startup should get you to ROMMON mode, and from there try to follow the procedure.

Thanks for your advice so far 'TheMut' - It is greatly appreciated!

I have tried the Ctrl+Break command on the HyperTerminal Session, but to no avail. It appears to stop the boot process, but then it just attempts to load the image again. It then comes back up with Failure To Boot - Not Enough Memory.
I'm probably resigned to the fact that I'm going to have to wait for my memory upgrade to arrive tomorrow.
However, if you do have any more suggestions, I'm still working on finding an answer.

Just to let you know, installed 16MB RAM, and image then loaded OK. Routes are all now working!
