What are the advantages and disadvantages to upgrading the software on a PIX 520?

MORE INFO - As part of my new job, I've inherited a network that is 5 to 7 years behind current technology. My boss wants me to make a case for upgrading our firewall, which is a PIX 520. Although I'm not really Cisco experienced, my "No-Brainer" reaction is not to upgrade, rather to implement a new solution. It seems to me that the 520 is past it's prime and current Internet uses (VPN's etc.) and the skills/technology available to intruders, etc., have surpassed the 520's capabilities, even with the latest software release.

Hi there -

Well we are currently running our entire company 500+ users 7 remote sites, etc. through a PIX 520 just fine. I have been keeping up-to-date with the OS versions and we are just fine. I have also setup a site-to-site VPN with a Checkpoint firewall as well as being able to setup an IPSEC VPN with remote clients as well as PPTP tunnels with default Windows clients. I really like the PIX firewall. Although some may snicker I find that it works great for what we need it for. (Knock on wood, we have not had intruders break through it). I hope this helps.
