I am about to upgrade a fried's PC from '95 to '98.
Does anyone have any tips for doing this please? He has backed up all his data and has enough memory.
If you know of any links please let me know. Thanks
Using the upgrade CD , or planning to do a fresh install?
In any case, does the friend have the installation media and instructions for loading any programs that were installed? And hardcopy of logins and passwords of anything so protected.
And to make it easier the next time you should document the steps you go through to get it up and running. Every time you need to make a choice or enter something it should be on paper.

If you are doing an upgrade, you may find that Win98 won't shut down properly. It may "hang" at "You may now turn off your computer." If this happens, don't panic - just write back in, there are many solutions. (This is due to some of the third party drivers for 95 don't like 98.)
> his will be an install over the existing Win95, using a Win98 CD.Is this feasible?
Yes, but IME installing onto a freshly formatting drive is less problematic. However you may find you only have an upgrade CD, in which case your options are limited
Forcing an upgrade to work on a drive with no OS can be done, but is unsupported, requiring you to fool the setup.
The words "install over" seems to say a full install without removing anything. (not an upgrade) You are going to hit some install problems and are probably going to have some application software problems. If you truly have a full version you would be better served to do a fresh install. That way you won't have to use BigJohn's "IME".
