I have used the updating service from microsoft on several occasions with no problem.
However, recently I have tried updating critical patches and after the download it just stops and doesn't continue with the installation.
Has anyone experienced this and know why or have a solution?

just reboot and go back to double check to see if it in fact gone thru

Windows Update is a very busy site it is subject to many glitches and you might just have to download again.

If the download worked you should have a copy of it somewhere on your machine. The trick is knowing where the update site downloaded it to and the name of the download file. It could be in a windows update folder, a temp folder or even in a restore point folder. See if you can find it and get it to install manually.

Alternatively you could go to the Windows Update corporate site and download and save the file for later installation.

Thank you linney.I did not know about that coporate upgrade site. Dave

The actual pron;lem has been resolved by MS.
This problem occurs using AOL.
The solution is to use Internet Explorer.

Not sure AOl is the problem. I've used multiple versions of IE and have the same issues. It seems the site is just busy. If you have the time to experiment, try downloading the .NET update sometime. It works maybe one Tuesday a month at 5 AM EDT. [peace]

It is your ISP, depends on the backbone your ISP uses

i do quite a bit of update for 60 computers and 5 servers, and my 6 home computers, i only encouter one down time from Microsoft.

and doesn't matter if it is week day, weekend, morning, noon, night, midnight and so on
