Here is another newb questions...

I am trying to update the IOS on a 2916 switch.

I am running the TFTP server on my PC. My PC is connected to the switch via the console port. I can ping the TFTP server from the switch.

When I try to copy the IOS to the switch it is timing out...
Will the new IOS overwrite the current IOS or do I need to make room for the new IOS?

Thanks!

If the TFTP server connection is timing out, it can due to one of the following:

1. You have no IP connectivity between the TFTP server and the switch.
2. You have specified an incorrect filename.
3. Your TFTP server is misconfigured and not pointing to the right folder on the server where the IOS image is held.

Check each of these thoroughly in turn and you will find your issue.

Some platforms will ask if you want to overwrite the flash (i.e. delete all existing files) and some don't. If you don't get asked, it will try and install the new IOS alongside the old one - so you may need to remove the old IOS manually using the "delete" command

I hope this does not insult you, but along with all the things that KiscoKid said, the TFTP Server application needs to be running on your PC when you are trying to connect. Just one other scenerio that causes a timeout response.

I'm confused... You mentioned that you are consoled into the switch from your PC... You cannot TFTP over the console cable (you can Xmodem, but that's not advisable)... Make sure you are connected via a network cable and that both devices (your PC and the management vlan are in the same subnet).
