Hello,
I have a PC running XP Pro that ran into problems this morning.
Boot up is really slow. Opening any program is really slow.
Windows update kept saying it was updating every time I shut it down. (I have turned off auto-updating, so this has gone away, but other problems persist).

Last week, I had similar problems with this PC. Automatic update kept popping up saying 'Installing 1 of 1 update' - it would say it was successful then do the same thing again minutes later.
The other issue that happened at the same time was a problem with opening the Simply Accounting database used on this computer. I contacted the vendor, and they had me resintall the mdac, which fixed the problem.
I manually uninstalled the specific Windows update that was causing the problem, then reinstalled.
All was fine until this morning, when I ran into these problems (above).
The Simply Accounting problem is also back again.

I've tried doing a system restore, but it doesn't work.
In both normal and safe mode, I can get to the screen that allows me to select my restore point, but when I click 'next' - nothing happens.
Another oddity is that if I try to see updates installed, by going through "Add/Remove Programs" - the currently installed programs never load...

Any suggestions??
Thanks!
Amber

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Here are some general bits and pieces about Windows Updates, maybe your computer is too sick to bother fixing individual problems and needs a fresh start?

See if there is anything here.

Thanks for all your suggestions!

I ran chkdsk - nothing came up.
I ran Sfc /Scannow - took a loong time, but completed.
No difference.
I uninstalled all the Windows Updates that took place yesterday. Then I tried to manually reinstall them and all but one installed fine. (KB927779 failed - error msg "An error occurred while copying file msjro.dll") This was the same update that was causing grief last week.

I then reinstalled Win XP Pro over top of itself.
It came up with a bunch of error messages.
1st set - Delete Error: an error occurred when deleting file C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\ado\ADOMDreadme.txt. Data Error (cyclic redundancy check) error #23.
Then this same error came up for the following files: ADOreadme.txt, adoxreadme.txt, JroReadme.txt.

Then the following error came up:
"Copy Error - An error occurred while copying file adojavas.in_. Cannot copy file to destination directory."
This same error came up for the following files: adovbs.in_, msader15.dl_, ado15.dl_, msado20.tl_, msado21.tl_,msado25.tl_,msado26.tl_,msado27.tl_,msadomd.dl_, msador15.dl_, msadox.dl_, msadrh15.dl_, msfro.dl_, MDACRdMe.ht_.

I continued install despite errors.
As an attempt to get Simply Acct. back up (at least temporarily) I tried the same fix I had to do last week, reinstalling MDAC, and received the same errors I received on the Windows install.

Whew! I'm sure this is too much information...but thought I should be thorough!

Thanks!
Amber

To check your RAM.

To check your Hard Drive.

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to check your drive for problems.

If they don't discover any hardware problems, what about backing up any valuable data (if you can still access Windows) and reformatting and clean installing XP?

With such an avalanche of errors it is hard to think of any other suggestion. Perhaps someone else can?

I thought maybe this was sounding like an MDAC/ado problem...
