Update problem with KB941649 - error 0x80041002

On a Vista Home Basic desktop system, the update KB941649 caused the system to blue screen on reboot when it was applied with several other updates. The Winboot.exe file would be missing from the system32 folder. Going through the repair action when booted from the install DVD would fix this problem until the updates were again applied. I then applied all the updates that were pending individually, but KB941649 would always fail with the error code of 0x80041002. I could not find any reason in the log files or in the update forums for this error. I have hidden this update for now and don't think it really will effect me as it appears to be primarily for mobil systems - this is on a desktop, but am concerned that future updates may also not apply if this one is a prereq to one of them. Anyone have any suggestions on finding the cause, or of potential problems down the road if I leave it hidden?

I saw that KB Post so downloaded from the link in the Microsoft KB Article and tried that - same result, so since I assume the update is in that post to level 2, that issue should not be present with the update. It does not give me a way to check if I have the "older level of SATA" other than the command that is implemented for them. I also do not know what module would have been effected by that issue. I am fairly certain the desktop does have SATA devices tho.

Have you had a look in Device Manager Under Storage Controllers to see what Vista has put in ??

Do you perchance have the following installed?

UPHClean 1.6d...

then you will need to uninstall it, completely before continuing...

if it is not (should not install at all at present with Vista, but you never know) then ignore my rambling about it...

linney - Those references refer to a session that is found with the update forums on the Microsoft site, and none of the bypasses or corrections mentioned did any good.

BigBadBen - No, that is not installed. Vista Home Basic was installed on this system when it was shipped - it is not an upgrade, but thanks for the suggestion.

Searching some more, I found the error 0x80042001 to indicate there is a problem with the XML code in a file. I have no idea if that even applies here, as the reference was dealing with Visual Studio and not Windows Update.

I don't think that keeping this update as Hidden will cause you too many problems, if you put in Vista SP1, which will be released very shortly.

Did you ever try a manual download of KB941649, and have you tried getting it in after disabling all your security programs such as virus scanners etc?

linney - Waiting for SP1 is what I was thinking of doing too. I will watch the updates between now and when it is available to make sure they work okay.

ArizonaGeek - I think I disabled all antivirus and firewalls but am not sure. I remember doing that at one time, but then am not sure I did that when I tried to individually install that update, or when I downloaded it manally and attempted to install. Will try that again when I get some time.

with the way you are having issues....SP1 is out now ....for system builders and if you the download you can run as administrator
it is supposed to load what you need but having vist 64 it does not always work as you need ....lol


I would almost run it without the update site because of the issues you are having

Well I have found that Vista does funky things with installs if you have your firewall turned off. I tried for the better part of a week to get my Zune software installed and kept getting errors. I just happened upon a post in some odd thread someplace after what seemed like 100 Google searches saying to turn on the firewall. Sure enough as soon as I turned it on, it installed with no issues.

Not saying that is a solution to yours but something worth checking for sure. If it is off, turn it on then try the install.
