Having been deprived of use of my system for some
3 hours whilst MS dowloaded Patch 3 files I then had
the supposed installation procedure go into a hang-mode.

There was absolutely nothing happening that I could detect.
My HD light was permanently off and the Task Manager
merely confirmed that the same old thing was continuing to
happen - but without any evidence of an advance in the routine.

Eventually I was forced to hit the initialize button -
and start again with the UpDate routine via my browser.

Only to find that the 3 hour-dowload-trick appeared to be
about repeated.

Since the necessary files appear to have been downloaded
can someone tell me where they are. And whether I am able
to simply trigger the installation from somewhere - without
dowloading everything again.

Thanks in advance.

TERRY

I can now be more specific.

I did the whole trick again.
Downloading all the Service Pack 3 files.
The installation routine gets as far as
Creating File ims.cab and then
just hangs.

>Are you using this link to download whole service pack (124MB)?

No. But now I shall.
I got it via Start>WindowsUpdate and then (having got to MS)followed the usual route.

But I prefer your suggestion as then I end up with the Pack which I can apply when it suits me - and without having to block my telephone line whilst I (repeatedly ?) download te lot.

Hi Wolluf!

I tried that URL - to find that the file is 130Mb - which is surely outrageuos! :-(

I nevertheless tried to download it - to find my 54K/per sec
modem is only transferring info at 5.3 K/per sec. :-( Making it an 8-hour-exercise.

I nevertheless set about doing it - only to have it drop out after 6 hours. :-(

Especially infuriating is the fact that that MS's download routine does not keep track of how much has already been downloaded . So if you start again ... you really start again ... which I am not prepared to do.

Another irritation is the "normal" manner of downloading the update (i.e. Start>WindowsUpdate) eventually refers one to some place in the MS Update Website which relates to one having difficulties with downloads which doesn't exist!!

Any further ideas? Anyone?? :-)

I finally got the SP 3 downloaded into a folder.

I ran it (for which I had to be connected to the Nett) and finally got confirmation that it had installed.

But when I look at the Install/Remove Software it is still not there.

Nor do I have the following in my Registry ..

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Jet\4.0\ISAM Formats

... which tells me (I think) that SP 3 is still not installed.

I might add that thanks to UpDate 329170 (which I eventually had to uninstall because it caused so many problems) my system won't switch off and can't reboot automatically (as installation of SP 3 wants to do)and perphaps this is part of the problem. But even if I switch off - and on again - still have the problem.

Any suggestions anyone? These W2K updates are driving me nuts!!!
