Hi,

I have a question about Global address list.
I am using Exchange 2003 server. When I create a new user, I cannot find him in the Global Address list immediately. I have to wait for 24 hours then will appear in Global Address list.

Does anyone know how to change the setting then I can see it after I create a new one.

Many thanks in advance!

Never tried this but it may work:
1. In exchange system manager-Global settings - Recipient update service
right click and click rebuild
2. On the outlook client, under send/receive - download Address Book

You need to give the GAL time to be rebuilt before you download the OAB, though. Otherwise, you'll get the old version.

The above posts are true if you create your Outlook 2003 profile in cached mode (which is the default for Outlook 2003). In cached mode the Outlook client is actully looking at the offline Global Address list, which is usually replicated once every 24Hrs. I use cached mode only for Laptop clients that require the ability to work off-line. If you install Outlook profile on a desktop that is always connected to the LAN (when accessing Outlook), I would reccommend NOT installing in cached mode. Client in this configuration are using the actual GAL an would receive up-to-date changes.

To make sure that changes are seen in the GAL immediately, send an email to newly created mailboxes.

Curious as to why? Cached mode uses less bandwidth. Some rules won't run unless you're in cached mode. Cached mode gives you access to mail when the server is offline or your connection is troublesome.

Sure...
Here is why we have set up Outlook with cached mode disable (on workstation).
1. Bandwidth on our LAN is not a concern. Current utilization around 3% with peaks around 8%.
2. High redundancy from the Network layer to a 4 node Exchange Cluster and Multiple Public Folder Servers. Meaning Servers better not be offline.
3. 4,000 + users on the network. If the Exchange servers were to go down, true they could work locally, they would still not be able to send/receive. I know, mail would be queued.
4. Support - The reality, with cached mode enabled, help desk becomes inundated with calls from users asking why that don't see so and so in the address book.
5. I'm not familiar with which rules become unavailable when not in cached mode. I could only guess that it is some type of rule that was designed for off-line use. I will take a look at that but if you could be more specific that would help.
6. Most important reason, Changes in the GAL are available to the user community right away.
