unwanted hidden characters show in outline view

Help:

I placed an rtf file (created in Word) into my artwork. Show hidden characters is unchecked. Yet the tiny hidden characters show up in outline view and are printed. Paragraph marks don't show and there is a difference between showing and not showing hidden characters but I can't get rid of those pesky tiny hidden characters.

Copying and pasting loses formatting. I was hoping to preserve the formatting hence the use of an rtf

Why not use a pagination program to place text such as Quark or Pagemaker. Illustrator obviously does not have filters to handle Word xxxx. You may search for such a filter on Abode's site. Let freedom ring!
