We try to back-up a W2003 storage node, via StorageTek drives T9940B. As HBA, we use en Emulex LP9002. The SAN is built with McData 6140 switches. The firmware of the HBA is the last one available. As driver, we use SCSI miniport, release 5.5.10.

During a savegrp, we receive the “unknown error 1111” message; as reaction, NW unloads the tape (despite the fact that the tape is not full), and loads another one.

Fri 04:25:46 media warning: rd=inf01blockdc99:\\.\tape3 moving: fsf 1: unknown error 1111 (0x457)
Fri 04:28:16 media notice: Volume "DB0169" on device "rd=inf01blockdc99:\\.\tape3": Cannot decode block. Verify the device configuration. Tape positioning by record is disabled.
Fri 04:30:36 media warning: rd=inf01blockdc99:\\.\tape3 moving: fsf 6: unknown error 1111 (0x457)
Fri 04:32:45 media warning: rd=inf01blockdc99:\\.\tape3 moving: fsf 6: unknown error 1111 (0x457)

Sometimes, we have this one:

Fri 08:05:49 media warning: rd=inf01blockdc99:\\.\tape3 writing: unknown error 1117 (0x45d), at file 110 record 4145
Fri 08:32:38 media warning: rd=inf01blockdc99:\\.\tape3 moving: fsr 3287 (read): unknown error 1111 (0x457)

The consequence is the same than previously.

In the Event viewer of W2003, we can see a event with id 11, regarding a SCSI error on the HBA. (lpxnds)

The device, \Device\Scsi\lpxnds1, is not ready for access yet.

The NW server runs under Solaris 9
We use NW 7.1.3 all around.

Thanks in advance

As this is an OS error of a Windows storage node, you better search there. I found some hits in the MS knowledgebase using "1111 scsi". This points to either unexpected bus resets or wrong block size or related issues. Please search in this direction.

Check to see wheather you created the library correctly on storage node ( or device) i think default block size by which networker writes to the tape might be 64k, i would also run all the diagnostics avallable for the device and tape systems that you are having issues with, if needed recreate and double check device type during creating rd.
Also make sure your timers and other espects are correct.
you may also want to check with FC manufectarer for his recomendation on FC BIOS setup and SCSI BIOS setup on Backup server, for instance Adaptec sometimes recoments disabeling Domain validation and droping tranfer rate to 80 MB/SEC.
Check all timeout and timer values of the device and server increase where needed.
