Unique Workstation ID generator

We are in the process of doing a workstation refresh. We will purchase desktops and laptops that will be built using a base image, windows XP will be the os. A 3rd party vendor will lay down the base image on each unit and then ship to the sites. Once at the site we will be responsible for among other things to add a unique workstation ID to each unit (6,500 plus). Desktops will start with DS###### and Laptops will be LP######. Once the unique ID is on the unit we will use Tivoli to distribute the remaining packages needed depending on the requirements for that user. Any suggestion on how we can generate unique ID's to be put on the units and keep track of them.
We usually do unique IDs based on the serial number of the machine. I wrote a nifty VB script that prompts the tecchie for the serial number, then it adds the LP (in your case) and renames the computer and it also changes the Administrator password on the machine to the serial number with a couple of extra digits before.
