Hi i can't get into windows XP at all. I upgraded from Windows ME and still have the files saved on my HD. Anyone know how i can revert back to ME from DOS???

I can't do any work until i've done this! DOH!

Cheers

Can you explain what happened during upgrade & what happens when you try to boot? Did you leave filestore as FAT32 or upgrade to NTFS? You can't uninstall XP from dos - if you checked option to save existing operating settings you can uninstall from within XP - so we really need to know what went wrong with XP and see if we can help you get machine booted.

PS. Have you access to another PC you could load your drive as a slave? Then you could hopefully back up all your data files in case you need to run a clean install (ie, wipe the drive) of one of your windows operating systems.

Windows XP worked fine for a while, then it kept corrupting the SAm, Security, Software etc. files so i got used to copying them over from the windows/repair directory. Anyway now windows gives me a blue screen and restarts before i can read the error although i think its moaning about the Software file or its log.

When I upgraded from WinMe i got XP to make backups of my WinMe files but as I can't get into XP I guess thats not of much use.

Have you tried running the Repair function of Windows XP?
Boot from the Windows XP cd and go through the Install except when it asks if you want to install new or repair, select repair. Try that and see if it helps. Its better than trying to completely uninstall the entire OS. John D. Saucier

jsauce, yeah i tried that a little while ago, cheers for helping but i've run out of time so am now formatting my C drive and am going tto put WinME back on it. Its a shame cause XP pro had loads of useful stuff on it.

I wonder why you would choose Windows ME over Windows XP. Windows ME was and is still the worst OS Microsoft has ever made. If you are going to format anyway then just do a fresh install of Windows XP. John D. Saucier

Forgot to finish. The screwups probably came from having Windows ME on it to begin with. John D. Saucier

jsauce, yeah i know what you mean about WinME not being great. Unfortunately its the only other Windows i've got. Its a real shame as XP Pro comes with the limited version of IIS and all the other extra's which are damned handy for my work etc. When i first upgraded to XP i left loadsa programs / rubbish on my C drive. Think i'll re-install XP (as an upgrade again) later this week maybe as I've formatted the harddrive and there's loads less rubbish on it now.

Maybe I'll try having a dual boot between WinME for normal windows stuff and Linux with Apache on if I get more problems with XP Pro....

If you're formatting the drive, why not just install xp clean as jsauce said?

Too quick to click.

I meant to add that even if you have the xp upgrade cd, you can still do a clean install. Boot to the xp cd, start installation, you will be asked for your qualifying product, insert the ME cd, then keep going.

Didn't think it'd let me do that as its an upgrade. Anyway it ran overniught and is working again now (XP that is). Have to see what happens now. Cheers for the advice... can't believe I could've done a clean install by inserting my WinME disk... DOH!
