I am using a DLINK DSL 504T broadband router to supply 4/5 computers in my house and up until last week everything was fine.
After trying to set up Port Forwarding on my router though I properly messed up my connection. I therefore deleted it and recreated it and ever since then none of the computers are able to view a number of sites namely MSN, Microsoft, Hotmail and Ebay.

This does seem rather strange and I certainly haven't set any URL's as being banned within my router.
My network consists of 3 PC's and 1 Mac. I've checked the HOSTS file to see if any virus has been playing silly buggers but all seems well there.

I have therefore come to the conclusion that it must be the router if all 4 PC's are suffering from the same problem.

Any ideas as to the cause of this problem or the route (no pun intended) I should take to solve it?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

UPDATE
-------

Sorry I forgot to mention that I am also unable to receive email from 2 of my 4 email accounts for some bizarre reason. This definitely isn't a mail server issue and has only started happening since the Router problem

Thanks in advance,

Chris

UPDATE 2
--------

I also can't PING the above websites or connect to MSN Messenger.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Have you tried resetting the router back to factory defaults or would that reset too many custom settings?

dunno about your router type, but some of them have very high level firewalls set up as default on them, which might concieveably block some sites...

Yeah I know I could reset it but unfortunately this means losing the internet for a few days due to the fact that DLINK 'easy setup' gear requires 1 Rocket Science degree and a hammer. [mad]

I can access all the URL's through proxy servers so for now that'll have to do.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

if you can access through a proxy, then it certainly sounds like a firewall/blocking problem... try disabling the firewall to see if you can access the sites...

Unfortunately for virtually anything to work on the router, NAT & Firewall has to be enabled. It seems like they are one and the same thing which makes me think that they are just using the benefits of NAT as a really basic firewall.

I know this is common but there is no feature for adding sites to block etc. The firewall is either on or off.

I thing I might just buy an ethernet modem like the ADSLNation X-Modem and setup a Win 2003 PC to distribute the Internet around my house. I know it sounds like overkill but I have been learning Win 2003 for a while now and i guess this is just the kick up the ass I needed.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I think you would probably rather have a kick IN the .., lol.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

Might have to look at the sites and see what is different. Some may use something like FTP, or a different protocol or a different address or port number. i.e. 27, 3000, etc.

MSN has its own problems. They might have an update out for their software.
