Unable to surf to http://localhost/

IIS 5.1
Windows XP Pro
Have installed Visual Studio .NET Academic

Problem:
Unable to surf to

http://localhost/

I go into the IIS Manager (inetmgr), where I can see the local computer listed under the Internet Information Services icon in the left pane. I right-click on it and select Browse from the menu. The status bar at the bottom of the window says "Opening page

http://localhost/..."

and shows the progress bar to the right. After a minute or two, I get the message "The page cannot be displayed." At the bottom of this error page, it says, "Cannot find server or DNS Error."

Any suggestions or recommendations?

Could you open your local page by typing in

http://127.0.0.1/

If you can, just search for the file hosts (no extension) and add following line in this file.

127.0.0.1 localhost

If not, please give me more information on your network and IIS configurations.

No, I cannot open 127.0.0.1. The same thing happens as described earlier.

What additional information about the network and IIS configurations would be helpful?

I did just recently upgrade from Windows 98--though I ended up doing a full install of XP. I can sometimes surf to local HTML files, but I can never surf to anything with an ASP extension.

Didi you tried also using your IP address (

http://yourIPaddress)?

to know your Ip adress--> Start-->Run-->cmd
once there type ipconfig

In what enviroment are yuou working? NEtworked or by yourself?
IF netwroked, make sure you use the proper DNS settings. A+, MCP, CCNA

Yes, I have tried my IP address. The effect is the same whether I use the IP address, the computer name, or just localhost.

Environment? My PC is one of two computers connected to a router that goes to a cable modem. (Effectively, both computers are directly connected to the Internet through the router.)

Following an instruction elsewhere, I renamed the global.asa file in the

http://wwwroot

directory, and that seemed to help some: It became possible for me to surf to a simple hello.asp page within

http://wwwroot,

though I still couldn't get to IISHelp.

When I change the .asp page and reload, sometimes I see the change immediately; other times, the page doesn't seem to want to reload.

check if you have the Run scripts rights under the site properties..That is what I was asking..what is the error page saying? A+, MCP, CCNA

you should try doubleclicking the default web site it will then open in the left pane, double click till it says WEB SITES double click till it says Default Web Site then right click and select properties when open select the Home Directory tab look at the local path to see if it point to the directory that contains your index.html or htm,shtm,shtml program (you only have to fined the folder as it will not show the index.???? file) once this is done apply and ok it. then open an internet explorer page and you should be able to type

http://localhost

or even just the name of the iis computer it is located on to reach that html page

I got the same problem. After I remove the firewall, I can surf

http://localhost/

or

http://computername/.

So, try to reconfigure your security feature.

I have a similar problem... Running Win2KPro SP3 + IIS5.0. Don't think it's related to IIS though... I can surf if I use my local IP address (i.e. 192.168.254.251)... But

http://127.0.0.1

or

http://localhost

=> No go. NOTE: I can ping 127.0.0.1 OR localhost.

I do have the sygate firewall installed but not launched.
