I am unable to start 2 services on XP, the "Task Scheduler" service and the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" service.

When trying to start the services manually I get a timeout error saying that the service did not start in alloted time. After longer periods of time the service still reads "starting" and never gets to a "started" state.

I have had SP2 installed for approx a month and have not had any problems. I am also up to date on all XP security updates. I am running Norton Anti-Virus.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Norton AV (or any antivirus program) is not enough anymore. Do the cleanup steps detailed in faq608-4650

Could you Start, Run, services.msc and state the running desposition for both RPC service entries and post back?

My event viewer is saying the following for the WIA service:

DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service StiSvc with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{A1F4E726-8CF1-11D1-BF92-0060081ED811}

There is not event viewer log for the Task Scheduler service.

The RPC services are:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) -- Started
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator -- Not running set to "manual"

I have found that when the WIA service is in "starting" mode, it takes a long time to browse my c:\ drive. When I disable it, I can browse with no delay's like normal.

look at the services mmc... it should say :

for task scheduler
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
in the path to execute... it should start automatically, as well.

on mine, the WIA doesn't start automatically... you may need drivers to start that service...

There is a lot of stuff floating around at the present time. Your WIA service and Scheduled Tasks service problems could be dealt with, but there are likely other persistent issues with malware.

I would bite the bullet and do a repair reinstall:
You will not lose data or installed programs, but you will lose Hotfixes and service packs. Spend, with a firewall enabled, a little time at Windows Update.
