I have a WIN98 machine that I have connected to a WINXP machine with a crossover cable. the DSL line goes into the XP machine and a crossover cable out of the Second network card in the Xp machine to the win98 machine. I can use the internet on both the machines but when I go to share a printer from the XP box The 98box does not see the other computer or the printer. I have file and print sharing on both PC's. I can get internet on both but no sharing between the 2 machines. Did I forget something when setting these up?

can you ping the xp machine from the 98 and the other way by name? are the machines in the same workgroup name?

Be sure that XP's built in firewall is not active for the 'network side' NIC. Make sure the firewall stays active on the 'internet side' NIC.

both machines belong to same workgroup?
win98 logon (username/password) exists as a user on the XP machine? (does XP machine have simplified sharing on or off?)

Are you using XP's ICS to share the internet connection, or do you have 2 IP addresses from your ISP?

I can ping it by IP but not by name if I remember right. The machines are in the same workgroup.
Where do I go to find and look at the XP firewall to see if it is active for the Network side?

To Wolluf I am using ICS and both are in same workgroup.

I do not have user set up on the 98 it just comes with no windows logon.
How do I turn simplfied sharing on or off on the XP?
thank you
Dave

Not great at this stuff, but my $.02 is you may want to investigate the Network Applet (NetworkNeighborhood)Control Panel in 98, specifically the Access Control tab....you may have to choose "User Level" and point to a/the Group you create on the XP box??(Workgroup?)....The Logon for 98 (none present as you've mentioned) may need to be changed in the Primary Network Logon box in there as well..
I know that in 98, that the "Access Control" tab in Network won't even show up unless a "Client for MS Networks or Netware" is installed...(be careful of the Bindings, if you install the Client, though the default NetBIOS "may" be fine as far as security....not sure if NetBEIU will open up ports you don't want open). Your Firewall can select/deselect open/close accordingly.

Just some thoughts

On the XP side, others here, can help more than I.

It's probably has nothing to do with any setting on the 98 box. In most cases I've seen, it's usually one or both of the following:

1) XP's firewall is blocking file & print sharing across the network. In Network Connections (under Network Places), right-click the LAN connection in question and go to Properties. On the advanced tab, uncheck the firewall option.

2) A software firewall is blocking access. Make sure you add the IP range of your LAN or the opposite PC as a trusted source in the firewall settings. Do the same on both PC's if each has one installed.

After making any changes, reboot the 98 PC and you should be in business. If you have to from the 98 PC, go to Start->Run, type \\computername (the name of the XP PC), and hit OK. This should bring up an explorer window listing the shared resources of the XP PC. Also test to see if the XP PC can see shared resources from the 98 PC.

rocker40 - if the XP firewall isn't the problem....

You can turn simplified sharing on/off in folder options view. With it turned on, 98 machines should be able to see any shares as long as they're logged on to the network. With it turned on, you need a user set up on XP machine which matches logon on 98 machine....

... 'I do not have user set up on the 98 it just comes with no windows logon' - boots straight to desktop? Check the network properties - client for microsoft networks should be installed, and be primary logon (I'm presuming TCP/IP is installed as internet is working). Once you've set up network properties like this, reboot when asked, and you should get a network logon prompt. This logs you on to the network - supply a user name and password (blank passwords can cause problems).

but hopefully you won't need this - the firewall settings will do the trick.

may be useful.

I had this problem accessing a 2K printer from a 98 computer. I ended up having to enable the "Guest" account in 2K. But I was behind a hardware firewall so I wasn't too worried about the security with it.

Thank you guys I will try this tonite whenI get home.

rocker40;
FWIW; besides the 'typo' I made above ->I meant NETBEUI (not netbeiu).....it seems from (my)further reading, that NETBEUI is the safer one of the two protocols....NETBEUI vs. NetBIOS..as is explained here;
as well as having a really good site loaded with resources.
I'm trying to start my networking knowledge by going back one step to move two forward....even if alot of the stuff (9x/NT4) is older info, presumably outdated by 2K/XP and Firewall offerings (Hardware and Software).

What is the share name? Do to some Netbeui restraints you will want to stick to 8 char and no spaces or special characters. Short and sweet may do the trick.
