Mixed 5.5 Exch2K3 org....in test.
I am unable to send email from the Exch2K3. Unable to send to the Exch2K3 server from 5.5 or 2K3. Messages from Exch2K3 stay in the outbox. Messages to Exch2K3 from 5.5 leave the outbox but never arrive.
I am able to send from 5.5 to 5.5.

MTA will not start on Exch2K3 server either. Event ID's 137 9405 9996 9409.

5.5 IMS has been restarted. FQDN's are pingable...

Any ideas?

if this is corrrect then make sure you dont have SMART HOST
configured on your SMTP VIRTUAL SERVER...
IF the anser is no then also make sure you dont have DNS configured in your SMTP VIRTUAL SERVER
IF the answer is NO again then also make sure your exchange server is pointing to the correct INTERNAL DNS SERVER...
also make sure all your exchange servers are within the same exchange organization and are all listed in your INTERNAL DNS SERVERS

Thanks guys for the replys. The Default SMTP Server is setup as default. I have made no changes to it.

No smart host...under connections/advanced. No DNS Configured in the SMTP server...both servers point to the correct DNS server for resolution, they can ping each other via FQDN.

SYMPTOMS
If you are using an Active Directory tool such as Ldp.exe, and the entry for the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server message transfer agent (MTA) is deleted, an attempt to start the MTA on the particular server causes following error to be recorded in the application event logs on the server:
Source: MSExchangeMTA
Category: Field Engineering
Type: Error
Event ID: 9405
Description: An unexpected error has occurred which may cause the MTA to terminate. Error: Init Routing API returned error -1073478766. [BASE MAIN BASE 1] (16)

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
MORE INFORMATION
The error indicates the inability of the routing engine to initialize, and reflects the fact that the MTA that is being started is not a member of any Routing Group.

The MTA can only be deleted by using the Active Directory tools.

MS says this is a problem with Exchange 2K...I'm on 2K3

Any ideas how I can fix it?

Thanks for the reply Marc....I did that one already.. No go.

I honestly think you should now take a step back and go over everything again, WITHOUT assuming anything is correct.
A small insignificant mistake is easily made, but can have big consequences.

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, expect random guesses or no replies at all.

I removed everything related to the 2K3 installation. Got a new copy of enterprise and re-installed from scratch. Works fine now. Thanks.

Voila
