I am trying to go over to a pure IP network with our Netware 6 server. Consequently I am in the process of converting all the Netware Clients over to pure IP. I have installed the latest clients on all PC's with a custome install that selects only IP and removes IPX. This has all proceeded fine for all the PC's (mixture of W95,W98, W2K & WXP) nearly 100 except for 2. These are W2K Laptops and they refuse to connect to the Tree when running in only IP, in fact you can't see the tree at all. If you switch back to IP & IPX on the client then there is no problem connecting to the server. Any ideas? The 2 laptops are configured in exactly the same was as 6 others which I have no problem with. There is no problem with IP on these 2 that I can see as I can ping the server, get onto the internet etc. I have tried completely removing all networking and then reinstalling all but still they will not see the tree in pure IP.

I have had a location with a similar problem, only it was more widespread to their workstations using windows 2000. How do you have SLP configured? If you are using a DA, put the IP address or DNS name for your DA server in the listing for the client and see what happens. Whenever we have had some trouble logging into the network over IP, this makes a difference.

We are only running a small network 1 server and 100 users. We are not using DA. My Netware knowledge is fairly limited but I do not believe SLP has ever been configured.

NW6 usually has SLP loading by default. Check to see if this module is loaded. If not, you will need to configure SLP for your environment and have a directory agent running. This is not too difficult since you have a small operation. Check Novell's TID's for SLP or SLPDA to find a recent configuration tips. My guess is you will be able to accept the defaults and SLP will work fine for you.

Without SLP, your server is not 'Advertised' in an IP environment much like SAP is to IPX. It will solve a lot of problems. Also, make sure you are using the most recent client and post SP files.

I know this is an old thread, but hopefully some of you have found the solution by now. If so could you post the solution please! I am having precise same difficulty with an new install of Netware 6 sp3. IP log in is nearly impossible. I've tried playing with slpda, but if it is the ticket to a solution, I must be doing something wrong (running 4.9 clients on Win2000).

you really need to configure slp

there are multple tids on how to configure this
i would use a named scope personally as unscoped where really a 5 trait

when you configure the da then distribute the properties through your dhcp

from the client - you can check this by going to a dos box and typing slpinfo /all

you say you are having probs
at server type display slpda
what does it say? should say active and give scope - my preference is to use the slp.cfg here - all all server except the one hosting slpda edit the file and put the da's address in - then modify the da discovery to 4 so it only reads the cfg - also remember in monitor - server parm - enter scope name

also give us the details from the slpinfo

also type slp services at console - what do you get

are you distibuting da from dhcp - the da and the scope?

Thanks MUCH. I read the TIDs over the weekend and implemented on Monday and it now works like a charm. You pointed me in the right direction. The slp some how got remarked out in the autoexec file.
