Hello there,
I have installed a new HDD,partitioned the disk with a WIN98 statup disk, when tried to format, it didn't work, always quitting format at variety of %,tried to use CD support, but to no avail, floppy loads few things and hangs before enabling the CD. i changed controller and floppy drive same problem, changed startup disk still nothing happens, i even changed the HDD again, could it be a BIOS problem?
Although everything is configured properly.
Your assistance is much appreciated.
Thanks.

If you are able to FDISK and partition the drive, then I don't think BIOS is the problem. What kind of HDD is it? Check the OEM's website to see if they have any disk utilities that can help. Crisc, thanks for your reply, the HDD is a Maxtor D740X-6L
20GB, i went to Maxtor's website and downloaded the file that partition and format the HDD, it's a boot diskette as well, tried it, didn't work, the system detected the floppy, but cannot load DOS, which is very weird, as i said, it's a boot disk.
by the way, i replaced the floppy drive and cables, same problem.

I don't know if this will help, but try setting the partition active in FDISK, if you haven't already done that. it may not work but it's worth a shot.

though it is not the proper way but you can try using Disk Manager that comes with Seagate HDD
just typr DM/X at the command prompt
i have tried this some times and it seems to work fine

I took a look at Maxtor's site and am wondering which one you used. There's one called "Maxblast Plus II" which is designed to setup a HD and one called "PowerMax" which is designed to run diagnosics on the disk. Your discription suggests you tried the MaxBlast tool, I'd say give the other one a try and see if it can fix any probs on the HD.
I agree that's wierd that your floppy couldn't load the system files off the Maxtor disk when it was able to off your Win98 startup disk.
Good luck. If you feel a post has been helpful to you, click on the link at the bottom of their post to let them and others know the information was of use.

Go back to the Hard Drive web page and look for a utility that checks the Hard Drive for serviceability. It may just be a bad Hard Drive. Usually if you have to send one back for a replacement they make you run their software to see if it is any good. Hopefully it is under warranty. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I know it's rather defeating the object but just put the drive in a friends machine and do it!!!!! FORMAT IT
Then return the drive to your machine to run windows setup!
Setup has to be done in your machine so the correct board drivers are loaded. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!
