I am trying to relabel a volume in order to get rid of some old aborted save sets. At the moment, I have nothing in that volume that I need to save, so I thought that relabeling the volume would be quicker and easier than individually removing save sets through the command line (Legato doesn't understand the meaning of GUI).

The volume in question is a file type device. When I tried to relabel the volume, I got an error message,
"Server <servername>: Failure to open directory for volumes path." I tried restarting first the NetWorker services then the server, but I am still receiving this message.

I received this message once before. I called Legato tech support, and the techs with whom I spoke were absolutely clueless about this error message. They eventually had me delete and recreate the device.

Does anyone know what this message indicates? What do I need to do to correct it?

Thanks for your help with this. I am still new to NetWorker, so all help is appreciated.

Sounds like you do not have the filesystem device mounted. Do you?
Does it show mounted under Devices/operations on the GUI?

What exact command are you using to relabel it?

Thank you very much for your answer.

I tried it both with and without it mounted with the same result. I have been able to successfully relabel that and another file device previously.

To label it, I am using Devices|Operations on the GUI, then clicking the "Label" button.

What version of Networker are you using?
Also, is there anything else in the daemon.log than the message you already gave?

Hmm, it looks to me like it is generated when it tries to remove the ssid files in a volumes directory.
Check the directory from within the O/S and confirm there are files there , for instance,
nsr, volume and a load of numbers.0 files.
If not, that is your problem. You may as well delet ethe volume and make it again.

Thanks for replying again.

I am using NetWorker 6.1.1, and there does not seem to be any error message relating to this in the deamon.log file.

In the directory corresponding the device I am trying to relabel, I have the files NSR.DIR, VOLUME, and a number of .0 files.

I can only get this message by losing the contents partially.
Try doing an mminfo -a on the volume and check the savesets.
If you then delete the savesets, see if you can re-label.
It might be that your media database thinks it has savesets that it does not.

(try an nsrim -X to sort that)

Thank you for replying.

Running mminfo -a on the volume in question yields the response, "no matches found for the query."

When I ran nsrim -X, the only line of output that referenced the volume was:

<volume name>: 0 KB used, 0 save sets, appendable

However, I do have files with a .0 extension in the folder that is the file-type device. Are these all aborted save sets? Are they orphaned somehow?

Can I simply delete them through Windows Explorer? If so, are they referenced anywhere in NetWorker's databases?

If mminfo -a thinks you have nothing, then just delete teh files from windows explorer.
