Unable to ping win 2k pro machine from win98 se pc

I'm having a strange problem where I cannot ping my windows 2000 pro machine form any pc on the network. The Win2k pc is able to ping all machines on the network. Both Winxp pro and win98 comes back with a timeout error while trying to ping.

Are you pinging it by name or IP address?

I'm pinging the IP. Netbieu are installed on all the PC.

First what is the result you got when you try to ping it from over any other computers

1 - if it Request timed out check if there any firewall install over the (win2k) computer

2 - if it Destination unreachable you have to add Gateway for the win98 to let can ping ( win2k) computer

3 – you have to be sure that all the computers in the same subnet mask

for example ( 192.168.0.1)
(255.255.255.0)

Sure sounds like a firewalll issue. Watch out for hidden firewall components in Antivirus software; PC-Illan is famous for this.

NetBEUI doesn't have IP addresses.

I get a request timeout error. All the machines are on the same subnet. Sad to say no firewall is install but I do have PC-Cillin installed. Will try uninstalling and see what happens. Thank you verymuch for all of your support.

If you have a win98 machine that is pinging try checking all the settings on it and confirming the one that cant ping is setup simular.

All of the PCs are configured the same way. 192.168.1.xxx subnet 255.255.255.0. No other PC on the network can ping the Win2K Pro PC. All of the other PC can ping eachother successfully with the exception of ping the Win2K pc.

Are these addresses assigned staticly or by a DHCP server?

We disabled PC-Cillin and it worked fine. Will replace with Norton Antivirus. Thanks again for ALL your support.
