I am having a very frustrating situation on my server. I cannot ping, unc or use remote desktop connection on about 75% of my systems. All of the systems are setup the same, controlled via GPO's. All GPO's are being applied to the computers that are not responding, and I have run out of ideas.

I am running Server 2k3 with 200 user systems and 250 users, yes I have shared computers.

Any suggestions as to why this might be happening and how to correct it would be great. Ask for any info you want, and I will be happy to provide it for the forum to review.

Thanks,
Chuck

Is windows firewall turned on, on the client machines at all?

Do you have some sort of policy for Windows Firewall?

Can you ping the IP address rather than the machine name?

Are all of the systems on the same subnet?

It was not, but I have disabled it via GPO now. I will test it in an hour or so, when I get a little more time to play with it.

PCXpress:
I cannot ping either the name or IP, I have 5 subnets, and it is very difficult to get a response from the four that my server is not a part of. On my servers subnet I am able to ping some times, but more times than not I cannot.

All subnets are managed via AD with DHCP Scopes.

Can you ping to your current subnet from the other subnets?

It sounds like a routing or IP config issue.

I can ping to some machines but not all of them. it seems to be very selective. I was thinking the same thing, with the ip/routing config issue, but with it allowing me to ping some machines and not others, it is throwing me for a loop.
I have noticed that I seem to be able to ping/remotely conenct to more XP machines than I can my 2000 machines.

It doesn't sound like a client firewall issue then. Can you ping from clients to other clients or are you just having trouble from that server.

Are you using DHCP to hand out addresses if so is if giving out the correct netmask?

It's also possible that you're having a physical network issue i've seen issues like this when a switch needs rebooting or has gone faulty. Can you narrow it down to that maybe.

You could try look@LAN to ping a range of IP's constantly to see if they drop out in groups.

I will try that out. Thanks for the help. I will post back once I have had a chance to try it.

Also, make sure you don't have any IP filters in place that block ICMP traffic. You're not running an ISA server are you?

Download Look@LAN like porkchop suggested. I used that to fix my problems and i normally leave it constantly running every now and then to monitor my VPN link and you can set it to run for 24 hours with it doing a network refresh every hour or so and see what computers respond. Great product.

Network Error:
Hit any user to continue

alrighty then, i installed the look@lan app and ran it against my network. I am seeing many workstations reporting that they are not windows, when every work station that I have is either 2000, xp or server 2003.

I am also seeing many blanks in the NetBios name and user fields. A majority, espcially those outside my lan, are showing the SNMP and Trap as red.

Not sure what all this means, but I bet it is going to mean lots of work for me.

Any help is appreciated.
