We have Windows firewall disabled through group policy and have checked the system and the service is not running. I just installed XP SP2 and I am unable to remotely manage the system, ping it, or connect to the registry. The policy is set in the Root Computer Policy and he has done a gpupdate /force to update his policy. Any ideas on what I have missed?

When you ping the workstation are you getting the correct IP address?

Can the machine ping out?

The right IP is showing and the client is able to ping out.

I found the following fix on a forum:

Export the following key
(hklm\software\classes\appid\{ce166e40-1e72-45b9-94c9-3b2050i8f180}).
Delete the key
Reboot the machine.
I am then able to remotely manage and ping the systems. We are planning on sending out SP2 to all our systems. Is there anything I could do beforehand so that this key doesn't have to be deleted following the upgrade?

No idea, I've got no idea what that key is for.

There was a bulletin just released that addresses my problem and it mentions changes to the security template cause these problems and there is the delete registry key fix as well as a command line fix that can be done before you push out the service pack to restore to default settings. I guess we can put it in a logon script once we test it. I'll post back with the results.
