Hi,

I have a few problems with Win98 lately. Here's one of
many.

I had to reinstall the operating system twice. The 1st time
to try and fix a modem authentication error. Resloved by going back to a previously good Sys Reg. The other to fix a Safe Mode sized monitor screen. Both times I recieved the following messages when Windows attemps to load Java Classes:

Window - Java Pkg Mgr -

Messages 1, 2 & 3 -

Unable to install Java Packages from C:\Windows\Java\Classes\Win32ie4cab
Unkown HRESULT: (800b010bh)

Unable to install Java Packages from C:\Windows\Java\Classes\XMLDS04.cab
Unkown HRESULT: (800b010bh)

Unable to install Java Packages from C:\Windows\System\DJava.cab
Unkown HRESULT: (800b010bh)

Can anyone tell me why this happens or how and if I need to fix this?

Thanks

Take a look here:

it may be related, look towards the bottom of the page for the text in red, while your there you may aswell visit Windows Update 98 is still supported. It reads as though you will have to extract a file to replaced a damaged one. All this appears to relate to IE4, what browser are you using?

Okay,

In an effort to fix the original problem, the online authentication error. I tried many different online programs young and old. Msn had a old version of IE, so if that's the case I'll upgrade back to 5.5 or better.

I thought it was Java files for windows 98 and not Internet Explorer.

Thanks

trybry; why not go with firefox/mozilla while you're at it. Leave IE disabled, don't upgrade it and keep msjava broken. Also - was this an ISP (Internet Service Provider)authentication error or a file error relating to a secured connection - if the latter Firfox/Mozilla = no problem. If it was ISP problem, it's prolly a bad/old DUN account you restored with old settings and/or INI files for the server on the HDD - not java. SO - you make your move.. BTW - yes only IE4.1 and below need those cab files for java....IE 5.0 and up is Spyware - so the java isn't necessary.

manicmark;
perfect link to fix that problem..for that a star

Thanks for the options,

I think it was an internal error, only because the modem
was being hung up by lowering the DTR(?). I thought it was the firewall going overboard.

I tried many online sevices (newly installed) and they all failed to complete the sign-up process. Even the create a new account option with existing providers would not go thru.

I never heard of Firefox as a browser and only thought Mozilla was a email program from years ago. Are they that much more superior to IE? I was never a big IE. fan anyways. My attempts to circumvent IE. by using Netscape (bought out by Msn) or Opera which never really worked for me (years ago). Seemed to be a losing battle.

IE. 5+ is full of Spyware, that's not so suprising. I just heard that Msn is coming out with a big old patch for XP. It's suppose to to fight the hackers, but it also comes with more limiting software. What I call trade-offs. They say they protect you from them, if you give up access to this or that.

Thanks for the info!

take back the choice for yourself - run minimal not maximal - I can't stand bloat
try Firefox= Browser only
Thunderbird = Email Client
Mozilla Suite = Both + Composer and chat client (I use Moz)

more secure ...yes
No ActiveX
Great built in popup blocker - not 1 since I installed
Many settings to personalize for yourself
easy Cookie blocking/organizing
Download manager
Plus....Tabbed browsing...1 window with many tabs as windows

honestly - after seeing all your recent probs, might want to reinstall from scratch too?
Have a 98 OEM CD?

TekTippy4U,

I admit it's slightly off-topic but still Java-related... have you run into the same problem with Mozilla as we have, i.e. browsing some MS sites just doesn't work?

For example, using Mozilla 1.7.1 (Stable), we can open the home page of but clicking on the link to 'Search the Knowledge Base' just doesn't work. (We're using JRE 1.4.2 to get the best out of Star Office 7.)

Regards,

Rick

Yes..I see...the link is broken here as well...BUT i know for a fact MS recently broke it themselves (~2 months ago?)....it always worked in the past - (using Moz). They did something to the script to mess it up. So, obviously trying to be proprietary with their active dcom vbs wsh html nonsense....they don't seem to care about standards. Then agian - it IS their site.
What I've had to do is create a shortcut to here
which does NOT give the 4 major search box drop down menus...but closer than the other page.
