I have been having an issue with My old 300 pentium2 box.
I was running into issues Windows XP and I desided to reformat and reinstall Windows XP. But during the installation process I keep getting error messages that the files that are copied are either corrupt or cant be found. I hit enter and the setup continues. I have taken the CD drive and switched it and I still get the same error message and Finally I tried installing the Hard drive on another PC to verify that the hard drive was fine and I had no issues. I have tried different cables. My only guess is that maybe the IDE controller on the mother board is messed up. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you.

I'd go to the HD mfr.'s site and download their diagnostics to further test the drive. Is this a clean install or upgrade?
Clean install might help if you're not going that way.

This is a clean install. And I have ruled out the hard drive by attempting to install WINDOWS XP with the hard drive on a different PC and it worked fine. Thank you for the suggestion.

I'd suggest you have another hardware problem (memory, motherboard, cpu would be my favourites - but anything else going bad can cause messages like this). Is the cpu overheating? Can you swap memory (or remove some while installing)? Remove any unnecesary (for install) cards (sound, network, modem). Swap graphics card? Slow down processor/memory speed? (if you can).

...XP...Pentium2???,you need an upgrade my dear friend!,unless you are just fooling around with your P2!

There's a dusty OLD Compaq Portable II (model 2650) out in my garage...and when I get around to it these folx would probably be able to tell me everything I need to know to get it running again.
(course I won't be putting XP on it) LOL

I've put XP on an old 440BX Pentium board system that does just fine for the purposes of my in-laws. Probably fastest thing they'll ever need.

I have a newer box. It is just that at one time XP was on this box. I needed a new install so I reformated and attempted to reinstall. Its not that it is needed it is a mystery that I can not solve and would like to find the answer. Thank you for your help

If I was doing it, I'd boot to a Win98 floppy and run fdisk deleting all partitions, wipe out the drive completely and really start fresh.

Its not my main computer, but I have win xp pro running on a p2 300 and it is working just fine. Not as fast as my p4 but its not that much slower.
Suggest you do like the person above said, boot with a win98 startup disk, fdisk and format. Did you do that the first time around?

I desided to go and install WINDOWS 98 back on the PC. This process went without and insodent. But now almost all my programs one time or another give me page fault errors. Does anyone know what might be causing this.

As I said earlier with XP problem - I'd bet on a hardware problem (something beginning to fail). You could spend a lot of time troubleshooting - good luck!

This can be caused by a dirty or old CDROM drive. I think sometimes the laser eye gets dust or something on it.
If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Used the program to test the memory and it looks like my memory has gone BAD thanks everyone for the help
