Unable to detect PnP Device

I'm trying to install a PnP DLink NIC but my Win98Se won't detect it. I already set it through Add New Hardware and it said that the device is a PnP device and tells me to restart the computer so it can autodetect the hardware.
I already restart the computer but still nothing happended (usually it will show "Found New Hardware message" if i attached new device). I also tried installed it manually but the device will not function.
Why sometimes it's very difficult to install/detect a new PnP hardware on Win98SE ?

What is the setting (in BIOS setup), of "PNP aware OS"? Also, it's possible that the NIC card is defective. Is this NIC card designed for Win 98? I have a couple of NIC cards that worked fine for Win 95, but won't work in Win 98.

the setting for PNP Aware OS is Enabled, and the NIC Card designed for win98, because before that win98 can autodetect the NIC (i'm using DLINK 538TX NIC). I don't know why since i install the new win98 this problem occur.

It could be that you should move the nic card to a different pci slot. That alone may very well take care of the problem for you.

If that doesnt do the job try turning PNP to off. Pcs are better off without PNP anyway.

One might observe that it isn't called "plug and pray" for nothing...

Certainly trying a different slot is a very good move.

zeitghost, i agree with your statement that agrees with my statement, lol.

I find, in addition, that having PNP enabled often causes problems. I always have at least 5 pcs of my own going and i disable PNP on all mine and all my customers pcs as a standard feature. I wasnt going to seem that firm on the issue but after thinking about it, well, its my experience with PNP and one doesnt have to follow my thinking on it. I just dont like to sound pushy i guess, but i honestly believe disabling PNP is best for most pc's. Thats been my experience.
Also, i have read quite a bit on the subject quite a while back and thats when i started disabling PNP. So its really not just my own experience.

Oh yes, i forgot, do try a different slot. It often works and there is a good, proper explanation for why this works, but i have forgotten it.

It might also be an idea, after changing the slot, to go into the BIOS and enabling the 'Reset Configuration Data' option, just to be sure this isn't causing any issues.
