Hi,

I have just set-up a new server with Windows 2000 SP3 and allowed Windows Update to upgrade it to the latest patches which included upgrading it to SP4.

I have only got 3 other machines on this very small network which are all running Windows XP Professional SP1. These have also been given the Windows Update service and are fully patched.

The problem is is that the three machines have been added to the domain fine but whenever any user tries to log onto them with their domain username, they keep getting the following errors:

Source: Userenv
Category: NONE
Event ID: 1054
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Description:
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.). Group Policy processing aborted.

The Applying user settings screen stays on the screen for 3mins+ before letting the user in, but with the error above.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Double check your DNS service. Win2k depends heavily on DNS.

Did this start shortly after installing sp4?
