Unable to connect printer to network

We have an Officejet 6210 all-in-one that is networked (Airport Extreme) with 3 Macs and a Dell Insperion without difficulty. Recently added a Compaq Presario running Windows XP to replace the Dell. The printer works fine with the Compaq via the USB connection, but I am unable to network the Compaq properly. The HP does not show up as a choice of printers during set up and the HP installation disc produces the message "The specified location does not contain the information about your hardware." I can choose "Officejet" and the printer networks perfectly well, but will not print in color and probably lacks other features. The test page printed during installation lists many files under the USB connection and only 3 under the Officejet network connection. It seems to me there must be a way to connect this printer to the network properly. (The Dell under Windows XP networked without difficulty.) Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Remove all defined printers on the Compaq.

The issue is that it is a USB printer, and the USB device name does not admit itself directly of redirection.

Set it up as a local, non-network printer, using USB. Run the software from HP to install it (likely as a DOT-4 printer).

Then run the printer wizard again and define a Network Printer. Choose some port assignment (not lpt1) for the printer, it will not matter. Give the printer a memorable name. It is this printer definition you want to share.

Thanks bcastner!!!! Using the Deskjet 550C driver as suggested in the referenced article did the trick. Time for installation -- about 30 seconds!
