We have one Win2k server with AD with 30 clients (Win2k and XP). Today on one of the XP clients, a user is logged onto the domain and tries to browse My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, Domain Name, but does not see any computers displayed. This user can access files on the server, but just can't browse - so they are limited to the mapped drives and shortcuts on the server. I am also not able to add a network place.

This problem occurs from time to time on various clients, but I am unable to find a solution. It will probably work tomorrow. Any ideas?

browering protocal is working from time to time, no big deal, if the workstation can access \\server\share, you are covered. don't use my network place to locate servers, use logon script to map the drivers.

Do you have NetBIOS disabled as this is required for Network Browsing. Try connecting to a UNC directly Start, Run, \\server\ - You can check if NetBIOS is disabled from a command prompt (ipconfig /all).

Can the user browse using the Directory? Do your machines have the Computer Browser service disabled by default? If there are no machines serving a master browser on a subnet then you would have problems browsing the network via MS Windows network.

I just checked the client that had the problem and now I am able to browse through My Network Places??? Other clients could browse yesterday. All are in the same subnet.

Thanks for comments and suggestions. I have a couple of questions/ comments.

NetBIOS is not required in an all Win2k/XP domain?? But it is required for Network browsing??

I also need to look into making a computer a master browser.

Much to learn.
