Hi All,

When I share a folder on a particular XP Pro machine, the only way I can access this folder is if the WindowsXP firewall is turned off. Anyone know what port I can add to the firewall exceptions list to allow access to this share?

Thanks in advance

My XP Firewall has File and Printer Sharing showing in its Exceptions tab, with TCP ports 139 & 445, and UDP ports 137 & 138 configured.

Thanks for the quick reply. I do see File and Printer Sharing in the exeptions list with those ports, but I still cannot browse the share from a Windows2003 server unless I turn the firewall off on the xp machine.

Is this something that began happening after the recent Windows Updates? Have you ever been able to access this shared folder?

Do you have a system restore point that you could revert back to?

Does the Firewall logging, or the Event Viewer, have any clues?

Windows Firewall (Security Logging)

It might tell you about a Port Number?

How is Networking from within "Safe Mode with Networking"?

Try the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Are there any other firewalls, or hidden firewalling components from other security programs such as virus scanners, conflicting with the SP2 Firewall?

Linney,

Thanks for all the suggestions. This is an IT_Desktop, and we have many network apps on it, so i'm sure something is running that is preventing me from accessing the shared folder. This is the first time I created the share, so I don't have a benchmark to refer back to. I'll go through your checklist and verify your suggestions.

Thanks again
