UC Module I/O error on upgrade

I've been trying to upgrade two UC modules (just arrived out of the box) to 9.0.100.12 without success. Most of the time I get either I/0 error (with the Kingston Datatraveler SE9 8Gb) or Disk Error (with all other brands). Even USBs that worked for the previous 9.0 UC mod upgrade are not working.

This is not the error documented by Avaya where the install is interrupted after starting where it says it can't find a file (although I did get that once with a Kingston Datatraveler G2 drive--but then it stopped working altogether).

I'm using unetbootin but I've tried the previous two initiator programs as well. Anyone else getting these I/O or disk errors that happen just as the USB is read?

I am trying more USB drives and have redownloaded files using different computers, etc. The only think I haven't changed yet is the cabinet that the drive is sitting in.

Thanks

I have had to rebuild a couple of these UC mod or upgraded it. The USB stick been my only glichhhhh!!!! I have seen 8.1 work with a Scan Disk USB I have had no luck with it on a 9.0 A generic USB works for me on a 9.0 but not 8.1 I have had a tech on site
Avaya tech tip say for 9.0

Unified Communications Module (UCM)- USB Flash Drive Compatibility
This Technical Tip is to advise customers about USB flash drive compatibility with the IP Office Unified Communications Module (UCM).
A small number of customers have reported issues attempting to use some USB flash drives to upgrade the UCM. When attempting to start the UCM from the USB Flash Drive "Unable to open kickstart file" may be displayed.
Due to the rate of change and the large number and variance of USB flash drive manufacturers, Avaya cannot guarantee that all USB devices will work with the UCM.
The following USB devices have been tested successfully; although, manufacturers can change the components without notice:

Kingston:
DataTraveler G3 4GB
DataTraveler G3 8GB
DataTraveler G3 32GB
DataTraveler G2 8GB
Sandisk:
Ultra Backup 16GB
Lexar:
JD FireFly 4GB

Do a full format too on the USB stick. not just a quick one. I have had that also make the difference

Thanks. I've been doing a full format--even using a new USB. I've been using the list of drives you mentioned but I can't find any of those in stores--too old? Maybe online. I have a DataTraveler G2 8GB but it didn't work either. I'm going to try some generic ones tomorrow.

Were you getting the same error(s) I mentioned?

I got the upgrade to start. We'll see if it completes (I had one that went for 3 hours and never completed). Anyhow, here are the steps I took--not all of them may be necessary.

I used a Kingston DataTraveler SE9 8Gb

Just now I did a full format with Windows 7 (I had previously been using XP computers and the formatting took a lot longer in Windows 7 so maybe it really was different)

I used unetbootin in Windows XP to transfer the latest image. This did not work when I tried it--I got a new error: "please remove the disk and press any key to continue" or something like that.

Without formatting the USB stick again I ran unetbootin on Windows 7 and transferred the latest iso with that operating system (64 bit version by the way)--overwriting the previous one. Then I copied the syslinux file and the avaya_autoupgrade file (there are different Avaya documents that say different things about which file should be used, one doc says there is a mistake in step 8 of the UC installation manual and that avaya_autoinstall is not the right file. Another doc seems to say that you pick which one you want based on what you are doing--small or major upgrade. I had tried both in different ways previously)

I put the USB stick into the UC Module after a reboot of the entire system and shut down the module. Then I restarted the module in the usual way (holding the button until the orange lights turned off).

I did not plug in the monitor until after the green lights started cycling up and down. There is nothing on the monitor currently. I'll post if the install/upgrade completes or not.

No, unfortunately the upgrade did not complete properly. I'll try it soon with the Avaya_autoinstall file . . . After that maybe try a major upgrade via tcp?

I tried the install again with the Avaya_Autoinstall file in the root directory and the install completed successfully. I noticed that I couldn't do the initiation properly in XP either (wouldn't display properly and then the UC Mod simply shut down) so I guess I'll be using Win 7 for these from now on.
