two subforms. message related record required

basic. three tables. contract & equipment & notes.
all linked by contractID on contract table. Form based on contract with two subforms. equipment & notes. As long as I only use 1 subform - works great. when I add the second I get the message, "cant add or chage record because related record is required on contract table. I don't understand - they are linked thru the autonumber field contractID. What do I need to do to fix the problem? plain english, step by step please, do not understand all the programming terms yet. (equipment & notes are set up identical)side by side subforms - so each can grow/shrink as needed. Just can't use them both???
