i have had millenium edition for a couple of years and decided to change to xp, following all the instructions i installed xp but ME is still on the system, how do i delete ME
It sounds like you have performed an upgrade install. You will never be able to delete every file from the previous operating system by upgrading in this way.
You should always, where possible, format and perform a clean install of the new operating system.
-I would especialy advise a clean install from ME as it had so many failings i would want to eradicate every trace of it.

Do you mean you can boot ME or XP? Or just that some ME files still there (as per CyberWarrior's post).
If the first, you have created a dual boot - which means you must have either installed into a different partition or a different folder in the same partition (both ME & XP default to \Windows - but if you changed default).
Whichever situation you're in, I'd agree with CyberWarrior - clean install is best. So, backup your data, boot from XP install CD (choose new install and ignore any reapir option offered), and when it gets to the bit where you choose where to install, use the partitioning tools to remove existing partition(s) and create a new one for XP (highlight, press D and answer the confirming prompts correctly).
I've seen where even a fresh install leaves the option in the boot.ini file to boot to the previous OS even though you cannot. If you can boot to ME then this is not the case but if you can't boot to it you can edit your boot.ini file and remove the line with (multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows ME" and it will not show when you boot the computer.
