Hello,

My office has T1 connection which provides 1024kbps but since its really slow compared to the speed we have been getting thru our dsl close to 3 Megs, we are thinking of keeping the dsl as well.

The reason to have T1 is to connect our remote office thru vpn.

Is it possible for connecting the dsl and T1 to our sbs server? And if Yes, what should the setup/settings be like?

Regards,
MJ

Depends on what you want to do. You could certainly have two gateways on your network, and route specific traffic through them. I like to have one connection that all the servers are configured to use, and also have email traffic use. Then use the other connections for the workstations. So:

configure all servers to use connection #1 in their IP properties;

configure your DHCP pool to give out connection #2 to your workstations.

For redundancy, you could configure both gateways on your machines, with servers have one set with a lower metric, and the workstations set with the other.

Hello 58sniper
I do get the overall idea of using two different internet connection. But would really appreciate if you could elaborate in a more detailed steps for carrying out the configuration in this setup.

Thanks,
MJ

Hello Fixtar.

I use Netgear dual Wan port routers. Model Number FVS538. It comes with a VPN solution and realy good key workd blocking. If I need ADSL connection i also use a Linksys ADSL modem model number AM200. You can download the manual for the Netgear, have a look, its not as bad as it looks.

Hope this helps.

Hi Craig2432,

Thanks for your tips, I am thinking of buying that model fvx538 but for a database application will a vpn connection for the remote office (running on dsl) be a good option? or should i think of getting a terminal server?

Is the vpn function of this netgear dual wan port router good and reliable? The remote office users logging at a time will be no more than 5 or 6 users.

Also do i need the same netgear router for vpn to function from the remote office or there is a software that can be downloaded on each station for vpn connection?

Pls let me know..thanks for all your help.

Regards,
MJ

Do you need the same router at both ends of the link? No. You were right is thinking that the clients just launch the software that comes with the Netgear. It realy is stabe and I have never had any problems. Have you looked at using Dynamic DNS to allow for role over is one of the connections fail?

Do you need a terminal server? It makes things run really fast. If you have the data daseapplication loaded on a desktop that has to VPN into the office and then point it at the server this can be slow and some times unworkable.

The best option is setup a test enviroment. If it works fine if not, look at a Terminal server. Alos look at the upload speed that is avalable in your main office. Lots of ADSL providers can now suppy up to 889Kb/s or there is ADSL 2 around in some areas which would provide upto 24Mb download and 1.3Mb upload. At around £39.00 per month.

Hope this helps, if you need any more help get in touch again.

Sorry.

The Linksys modems like to run cool. So Dont stack them ontop of each other or anything else.
