two groups on same line

I need to group by two fields but I would like to have my report formatted so that I can have two different groups on the same section as such:

X Y
group#1 group#2 //two grouping sections on one line
group#2
group#2
group#2

rather than having it look like this:

X Y
group#1
group#2
group#2
group#2
group#2

Go to format section->group #1 header and check "Underlay following sections."
