Tweening JPG Images

Having never used flash before and just started looking at the plethora of tutorials out there I would like to know if it is possible to tween (or at least thats what I think it's called) two seperate jpg images. for one to become the other ?

I have seen that you can tween text and shapes but cannot find tweening for images and have tried converting to symbols etc without any luck.

Also can anyone suggest a good tutorial (internet or book) for a beginner...

In my opinion the best tutorials for beginners would by from lynda.com. For a very reasonable price you can subscribe to their library of tutorials (you don't really need the exercise files). The biggest advantage is that you'll get a systematic overview.
Now back to your question. Normally you would do that with actionscript. However, for a complete beginner that would not be so easy. So, you could do this: put the two jpg on two separate layers, press F8, choose "graphic". Insert a keyframe in the timeline on frame 25 (or wherever you want). On the first keyframe down at the properties panel choose alpha 0, go to frame 25 choose alpha 100, click in between the frames 0 and 25 choose motion tween. Do the same thing for both images. Then, in the timeline, move the tweens so that one image fades into another. Make another layer and put stop(); action an the end.

shape tweening dont work well with jpgs

only with simple shapes...text, simple drawings etc

I suggested motion tween. With jpg shape tween does not work indeed.

o.k. I'll try again.
you have to motion tween alpha (or transparency) for jpj No1 from 100 to 0 in the time line from frame 1 to let's say frame 30.
On the layer bellow (where your second jpg. would be) motion tween alpha fom 0 to 100 (it will fade in) in the timeline from frame let's say 25 to 45 or whatever you want.
Google up tutorials about simple motion tween. You can motion tween transparency or alpha, just change your jpg into a graphic symbol (pressF8)
As I said, the best way to go about it would be to write an actionscript. But for starters you can try it the way I suggested.

I get the picture (excuse the pun) Basically your just fading & fading out 2 images at the same time but tha's not tweening is it ? I found out from a tut how to tween image to text but not image to image it didn't explain why.

Is this flash stuff a black art ?

You don't even need to alpha motion tween both pictures if they are of the same size.
If the top one starts off with it's alpha set at 0 (in fact 1 is better...), you'll only see the underlying picture, and as the top one's alpha increases, it will hide the underlying picture, without having the need to fade it out.
