I've just done a Windows 2000 Pro clean install on my PC. Everything went okay, and then I used TweakUI to change quite a few things. Now I find that the Control Panel has "disappeared". If I run "control.exe" from \start\run I get this message "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions placed on this computer. Contact your administrator".

The PC is a single home unit with no network and I am the only user, so I myself am the Admin (I think!). During setup I chose to have just one user, myself. But now I cannot seem to get control panel back... and without access to Control Panel, I cannot get access to TweakUI to reverse the changes I have made!!

Is there a solution to recovering CPanel without doing a complete re-install? Thanks for any help.

Try

Start -> Run Tweakui.cpl

to see if you can get straight into tweakui.

Thanks John, but I get the same "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions placed on this computer. Contact your administrator" message.

All I remember doing with TweakUI was unchecking the "show Control Panel on Start Menu" box as I thought it would still be available in My Computer. But no. It's vanished completely...

So I think I may not be able to "unhide it". :( :(

User Key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
System Key: {HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
Value Name: NoControlPanel
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disable restriction, 1 = enable restriction)

Set it to 0

Also, check this too:

Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Name: NoSetFolders
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0

Oh yes!!!!!!!!!!!! [dazed] [thumbsup2] Thanks one million mr bcastner! Oh boy you've really saved me a TON of work! Take a couple of these [medal] [medal].

It had taken me about a day and a half to set up this new system, what with d/loading all the W2000 fixes/patches etc (on a v.slow dialup line too) + setting up all the other odds ands ends. The last thing I did was to use tweakui to "pretty things up" a bit. Only to discover that CPanel had gone on holiday!!! I thought I would need to start over.

Thanks again. [smile] [smile]
