In setting up terminal services on a 2003 server, I had spent a lot of time investigating the printing requirements, with redirected printing for remote users etc.

However, it occured to me that with a permanent DSL connection and VPN routers at each end, I don't need to worry about redirecting printers. I have simply used Add New Printer to install the printer at the remote site (which with VPN is just another printer on the network) and print to it during a TS session.

It appears to work OK, but is there any reason why this might not be an acceptable way of doing things?

Nope, that's a normal way to setup Terminal Service printing. Do you have to do the installation every time you logon? There is a way to automate that if you do have that problem.

If it works, then don't try to fix it. :)

Thanks Daveyboy2. The printer is permanent just as a normal one would be.

The reason I asked the question is that the commended method is to install the printer drivers on the server and when you connect, the printer will automatically be redirected, as long as you use exactly the same name for both the printer sharing on the server and the local printer.

If I do that, my list of printers, as shown in the terminal services window, shows both my printer set up via VPN and the redirected one created by terminal services, and I can print to either.

I don't know if this makes any sense.
