I have a couple of questions that I haven’t seen addressed in any other posts. I’m trying to establish a router to router VPN between my home office and a couple of remote sites in different states. My main site has a W2K Server (w/ 5 XP clients, a DSL connection, and a Linksys BEFSR41 router) that is acting as a stand-alone server, not a domain controller. The router provides DHCP.
Firstly, I want to know whether a stand-alone server will work in this setup or will I need to promote the server. If I do need to promote the server, will this entail a lot of changes? And of the two remote sites, only one has broadband (DSL), the other uses a dialup connection. Also any recommendations regarding appropriate VPN routers/firewalls would be most welcome. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
One idea that I had heard about was to use PC Anywhere for the remote site without broadband to join the network. I’m in a quandary over how to connect these three sites.

Thanks,

Incoming Connection or RRA

You can create an incoming connection on a computer acting as a remote access server if it is running Windows 2000, XP Pro. or if it is a stand-alone computer running Windows 2000/2003 Server. For large numbers of incoming connections on a computer running Windows 2000/2003 Server as a router or as a domain controller, or a member of a domain, you should use Routing and Remote Access to create a remote access server.
