Apologies if this is the wring forum, re direction would be appreciated.

I am trying to network my laptop with my desktop but i cannot get them to appear on the same network via wizard so i tried a direct connect approach,
the laptop worked fine as a Guest set up in the new connection wizard however the PC keeps timing out and giving me this error

Incoming connections warning
Incoming connections depend on the routing and remote access service which was unable to start. for more info, check the system log

when I check the system log i see this

The Routing and Remote Access service terminated with service-specific error 340 (0x154).

I have checked knowledge base but now joy, has anyone any idea as to what is going on here?

Regards, Phil.

Just enable TCP/IP on both of them and give them IP addresses within the same network range, i.e. one using 192.168.0.1 and the other using 192.168.0.2. You don't have to use any wizard; also go into Control Panel and turn Windows Firewall to "off". If you are using a hub or network switch you can use straight through CAT5 network cables; if you are connecting the 2 together using 1 cable, it has to be a cross-connected cable...

Okay I've gotten a USB network system for the file sharing but the TCP/IP would work out better for me due to the connection and printer sharing needs.
However i have not idea where to start with this, have tried and field (again) any pointers?

Go to Control Panel, select "view in classic mode", then double-click the Network icon, then right click on the Local Area Connection and select Properties. Double click on TCP/IP in the list, usually its the bottom-most one in the list. Change the selection from Obtain an IP address automatically to Use this address and type in 192.168.0.1 mith the subnet of 255.255.255.0 and leave the gateway blank.

Then go to the other computer and do the EXACT same steps except give it the address 192.168.0.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and leave the gateway blank.

After all that, then go back to Control Panel, then select the Windows Firewall icon and set it to "OFF" on both PCs.

After you do all these steps, go to My computer, then select 'View Entire Network', then keep drilling down thru MS Windows Network, then most likely the workgroup name usually callede WORKGROUP, then inside there you should see your 2 PCs on the same network. No shares will most likely be viewable/accessible until you Right-Click on your hard drive within My Computer and enable file sharing.

Hope this helps, let me know,

Sorry i have taken so long to get back about this I have only just got the laptop back again.
Okay so far I have followed the above and these are my results, on the Laptop I can now see the desktop machine in the MS Home group but when I try to access it I a get a message saying

//main_PC is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission. The network path was not found

From the desktop I cannot see the laptop as I get this error message when I try to drill down from MS Home

MS Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission. The list of servers for this workgroup was not found.

I have shared both the C&F drives on the desk top and the C drive on the laptop and also enabled guest accounts on both machines as I have read that must be done and have also disabled my firewall (Zone Alarm Pro)and the Windows firewall but i am now stuck, any more ideas?????

do an ipconfig at command prompt. the ip numbers posted above, should be present on the "main" (server) computer and the client (laptop). also when you click on network properties on both, you should have:

client for microsoft network
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks
QoS packet scheduler
internet protocol (TCP/IP)

all four of these should have a check mark.
