Hello, i am trying to get my dns server to work dynamically. DNS for active directory will work fine if I point my clients to my dns server but if i say to obtain dns server automatically i cannot connect to other clients or server correctly. clients are xp pro. please help

If you configure the clients to get a DNS server automatically, they are getting it from a DHCP server. You need to check your DHCP scope options to make sure the correct IP for your DNS server is configured.

thanks. can you provide step by step instructions on setting the scope up for this. any help is appreciated.

That depends on where your DHCP is set up. If it is the Windows DHCP server, I can help with that (although the built in help should be all you need), but if it is a router, you'll have to check that specific documentation.

Ok, in the DHCP console expand your scope and click on scope options. See if you have 006 DNS servers there already. If not, right click on scope options and click configure options.

Check the box next to 006 DNS servers and type in the IP address of your DNS server(s). Do not enter any external DNS server address. Click OK to save.

On the clients, make sure they are set to automatic and then do 'ipconfig /renew' Then do an 'ipconfig /all' to doublecheck the DNS server entries.

Ok all that was set already. When i check ipconfig it shows my dns server as 192.168.0.1 when set to dhcp

when i set to static dns of 192.168.0.110 which is my dns server then dns of course works and ipconfig shows as 192.168.0.110

as soon as i set to dhcp, 192.168.0.1 takes place of dns server.

So 006 DNS servers is configured with 192.168.0.110?

What is 0.1, the gateway? Are you sure there isn't another DHCP server somewhere?

yes it 006 dns server under scope options. i use a d 604 router but have dhcp disabled on it. the dlink router has a gateway of 192.168.0.1 and is described as a dns server when doing a ipconfig /all on the xp clients.

Your reply is not clear about what is configured for DNS servers in the DHCP scope options. I understand that 006 DNS servers is there, but what IP or IPs are listed for that option.

Also, double check that the router does not have DHCP enabled. Many routers with DHCP enabled will configure clients to use the router address as a DNS server, since they do DNS proxying.

the server is 006 and has an ip of 192.168.0.110

doublechecked that router has dhcp disabled and does.

im stumped and i appreciate all your help. i might install another network card and run server with rras as a router.

When you run ipconfig /all on an XP client, what IP address does it say for DHCP server (should be right above DNS servers)?

it says 192.168.0.1 which is wrong and not sure why

it should be 182.168.0.110

i meant 192.168.0.110 obviously. i will figure this out. dhcp is not working properly.

The answer was in the scope. I deleted the scope and created a new one and made sure the router was setup correctly. Works like a charm now. Thanks for all your help.
