I need to create a distribution list. I only have one domain , one domain controller and one exchange server. I am a bit confused on the group scope, should i use domain local, global or universal. any help will be appreciated.

The key here is "mail enabling" any of the types of groups you mentioned.
Check out this link on the differences...ultimately, you can mail enable most groups to a mail distribution list.
