Trying to configure video card settings

We just recently got a SUNFIRE 280R running Solaris. I am trying to configure the video card (Resolution) to be compatible with the 15"acerview monitor on our KVM. I am currently using the /usr/sbin/fbconfig command. I used the command as follows ( fbconfig -dev pfb0 -res 1024x768x60 now nocheck ) Now when I perform the status command it shows the 1024x768x60 as the preferred resolution and 1152x900x66 is the DEFAULT setting. I want the 1024x768x60 to become the DEFAULT setting. P.S. The video card is a SUN XVR-100

Please keep in mind this is the second day I have actually logged into a Solaris server of any kind so I am still a newbie.

First, check to see if there are any patches available for th XVR-100. Documentation states patch #114537-19 for Solaris 8 and #114538-20 for Solaris 9.

Looking at the man pages for fbconfig and the documentation for the XVR-100, I do not see options "now nocheck".

Have you rebooted the workstation after your configuration change?

I did perform a reboot following the change and that is when I could see the new preferred resolution 1024x768x60. I performed a uname -a command and it shows
(SunOS machine 5.9 Generic etc. etc.) Does that mean I am actually running Solaris version 5.9??
Note: After I made the changes, I could then at least see the command prompt but it is split into three screens and it is fuzzy. Could this be a depth issue. The depth is currently set to 8. I only have the option of 8 or 24.

No, Solaris 5.9 should be the same as Solaris 9. For whatever reason, there are some Solaris versions with more than one name.

The depth option is color depth (8 bit/24 bit).
