I'm upgrading a win98SE workstation to winXP Pro. During the upgrade, I indicate that the workstation is part of a domain. However after the upgrade, I could not add any users to user accounts that were domain users (admin or not). The error message was "The trust relationship between the workstation and the primary domain failed".

The domain is made up of win2k servers. Can anyone shed some light? Thanks!

Is there an account set up for the PC on the domain under its computer name? Is whomever is adding the users to the PC or the PC to the domain and administrator on the domain?
Has the PC been added to the domain?

Yes, yes and yes. In fact, I've reset the computer account several times.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a shot and let you know what happens.

I did the fix in the KB article, changed the NIC in the PC and joined the PC to the domain after the upgrade (instead of during).

Problem solved! Thanks!

It is an obscure limitation, whose default setting can trip one up.

I have no idea why the limitation is there; I can only guess as to why it is a potential security violation.

Glad you got it sorted.
