Trouble with Word 2000/97 template creation

When i create a template in Word 2000 and then try to convert it back to Word 97 i run into some problems. When you fill the template out in Word and then try to do a Save As it will not let you save the file as a .doc only as .dot. I don't want to save the changes made in the template as my template. I have the form locked and password protected for modification. What can i do to fix this problem.

Create the file like such:

File...new...then be sure to select the TEMPLATE option at the lower right. Create the template....then close it. Then open it....make changes and then save as....whatever. It will let you save as a .doc.

You must remember that Word 97 can't read 2000 files but 2000 can read 97.

You can save the file in word as a doc version95/97 though....is this what you mean?

I think my question was misunderstood. The template was previously created by me where i work. I don't want to recreate all the templates I have already created once in 2000 and recreate them in 97. I am looking for a way to transfer them to Word 97 without recreation from scratch. When i open the 2000 template in 97 and try to do a file SAVE AS i do not have the option to change the save as type area from document template to word document because it is grayed out and not availavle for change. Is there a way to transfer templates i have created in 2000 to 97 without this problem?

Try copying and pasting all data from the 2000 to the 97 document. Then, try saving as a template. I dont have 97, so I am not sure if this will work.

I tried the copy and paste function and i get the same grayed out save as type area. I am at a loss and have so many that need recreated if i start now it will take me about a year to redo them all in 97.
