Hi,
Why is it that when I send a web site shortcut to my desktop and it gets a nice icon representing the site ( like Tek-Tip's white T in a red field), that icon later disappears and the generic IE shortcut icon is in its place..sometimes, the fancy icons return..Can that return be manually triggered?

the Website specific icons are favicons set by the website. Usually these get stored in the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files Dir. If this gets cleaned by whatever setting the icon image may be lost. And as such the icon reverts to a generic representation until the favicon is downloaded again.
Usually by visiting the website.

Also Windows has known problems when managing its icon cache. Basically the Icon cache is a file that stores the images for all icons used. This cache tends to get corrupted. When that happens Windows recreates the cache. windows by default uses the generic icon, until it realizes the shortcut has another icon assigned to it.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Hi,
Thanks..I'll see how long it takes to 'remember' the real icons..

After you delete the C:\Documents and Settings\usernamexxxx\Local Settings\Application Data (a hidden file so show the necessary options in Folder Options/ View) and restart Windows. That will rebuild the cache, it should then update it at the next visit to the site.

Icons involving IE often reset to correct icon once IE has checked to see if it is the default browser. You can do this manually via Tools/ Internet Options/ Programs/ Default web browser.

Hi,
Thanks..I'll give it a try

Whoops, I left off the name of the file in that file address, .......and the name of the file is.... "IconCache.db

take a look at line 108 second column & line 121 first column...

108 is a prog (rater old but should still work) where you can save out the FAV icons and 121 is a script which increases the ICON cache...

Thanks..I'll see how they affect this...

Thanks all and especially linney for the ideas..

Deleting the IconCache did the trick - as soon as I rebooted all the favicons came back...
