Situation:
We have two NT DC, 2k wins/dhcp, and we are not implementing active directory yet. We use a DNS server from a parent company from a different State (JDNS.abc.com). We have two domains (DomainI) and (DomainF). Also we get or internet connection from the parent company. We would like to set up a DNS so we can get on the active directory track. We really need a DNS for name resolution on or local side mostly, then get the internet and other resolutions from the parent office.

Question is. Do I have to make a windows 2k DC before I setup a 2k DNS or can I set it up using the NT DC's?

We are trying to take the best steps to convert to 2k Active directory and I am looking for some advice on what will be the best way to do it in this weird situation.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Thanks. I think I have it setup so far but I am getting a warning when I start the dns service. The DNS server name is LA-DNS and it is in the imaging domain so I do not understand why I am getting this error. I am thinking it is talking about putting LA-DNS.imaging.sfbcic.com or something I am kind of confused about this. Can anyone help me in this area..

When I use the Home office DNS and I ping or servers it puts a sfbcic.com on the end of our server names. If this helps any.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: DNS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 414

User: N/A
Computer: LA-DNS
Description:
The DNS server machine currently has no DNS domain name. Its DNS name is a single label hostname with no domain (example: "host" rather than "host.microsoft.com").

You might have forgotten to configure a primary DNS domain for the server computer. For more information, see either "DNS server log reference" or "To configure the primary DNS suffix for a client computer" in the online Help.

While the DNS server has only a single label name, all zones created will have default records (SOA and NS) created using only this single label name for the server's hostname. This can lead to incorrect and failed referrals when clients and other DNS servers use these records to locate this server by name.

Thanks. I got it now. Also can anyone tell me where to look to see the records for the computers that I registerdns with? I am not seeing them anywhere so I am wondering it it is dynamically updating it like I set it too. I am going to a client computer that has this dns server set and doing a ipconfig /registerdns. I would like to know where I should see this computer in the DNS system.

Thanks for you help.

Two (probably among many)ways you can check this.
1. On the server running dns go to start --> programs --> admin. tools --> dns. Look in your forward lookup zone and see if there is a host entry for the computer in question.
2. On another computer open a command prompt and type nslookup. Verify that it is using you dns server for it's default and type in the other computer's name and hit return. It should be able to return the other computers IP.

Well the computer I did the registerdns with did not show up in the forward lookup zone. I do not have this DNS linked to the DHCP at the moment because we are just implementing it would this have something to do with it? When I go to another computer that has the DNS linked and type the name of the other computer I do get an ip address. I thought that is creates a host record in the forward lookup zone but I only have the four entries that I started out with.

Thanks for all your help as you can see I am very new to DNS

Acually I just noticed that when I do the nslookup it is returning computername.sfbcic.com and out DNS name is imaging.sfbcic.com. I looked in ipconfig /all of this machine and it is showing that is has no primary dns suffix. Do I have to put in the same DNS suffix for it to register in DNS?

Hmm,
Well that is supposed to be one of the benefits of using the /registerdns switch. It should create the host entry (win2k dhcp by default automatically does this). If you dont use domain suffixes then the only thing that will be registerd is your computer name (computername. instead of computername.domain.com). When you did the ipconfig /all the dns server that you just set up is listed as the primary dns server correct?

It sure is. I got it I think. I had to take it off of the dhcp assigned ip address because it was storing the old sfbcic.com information on the computers. When I did this it showed up on the forward area. Thanks for all your help... Apprecaite it
